چکیده

3 S u m m a r y : We present simulations of the 3D nonlinear induction equation in order to investigate the temporal evolution of large-scale magnetic elds in spiral galaxies. Our model includes diierential rotation, ambipolar diiusion and, based on small-scale turbulence, eddy diiusivity and the tensorial-eeect with magnetic feedback. The nonax-isymmetric spiral pattern and { if considered { the vertical stratiication of the galaxy are represented in its density and turbulence proole. Neglecting vertical stratiication the lifetime and geometry of an initial magnetic eld depend on the correlation time of interstellar turbulence corr. Short correlation times increase the lifetime of the initial magnetic eld, but the eld is rapidly wound up. Its pitch-angles develop to zero. The magnetic eld has disappeared after at most 1 to 1.5 Gyr. A resonance like phenomenon is found by tuning the pattern velocity of the galactic spiral. The simulations then show an exceptional ampliication of the magnetic eld in the case that the pattern speed and a magnetic drift velocity have similar values. Considering a vertical stratiication we achieve suuciently long living grand-designed magnetic elds excited by dynamo action. The behaviour and geometry of the resulting eld is again signiicantly innuenced by the correlation time corr. Small values of corr lead to axisymmetric elds with small pitch-angles and eld-concentration between the spiral arms. Increasing the correlation time the solutions show larger pitch-angles; and depending on very large correlation times the galactic dynamo rather generates elds clearly within the spiral arms and having a bisymmetric structure. 1. INTRODUCTION Spiral galaxies have large-scale magnetic elds of diierent, but in the most cases spiral structure (Beck et al. 1996). In the last years several attempts were made in order to investigate the evolution of galactic magnetic elds with 3D numerical So far applied simulations were mostly concerned with mechanisms leading

Multiscale magnetic fields in spiral galaxies: evolution and reversals

Context. Magnetic fields in nearby, star-forming galaxies reveal large-scale patterns, as predicted by dynamo models, but also a variety of small-scale structures. In particular, a large-scale field reversal may exist in the Milky Way while no such reversals have been observed so far in external galaxies. Aims. The effects of star-forming regions in galaxies need to be included when modelling t...

Numerical simulation of large-scale magnetic-field evolution in spiral galaxies

The evolution of large-scale magnetic fields in disk galaxies is investigated numerically. The gasdynamical simulations in a disk perturbed by spiral or bar potential are incorporated into the kinematic calculations of induction equations to elucidate the effects of nonaxisymmetric disk structure on magnetic fields. The effects of interstellar turbulence are given as the turbulent diffusion of ...

Molecular cloud formation and magnetic fields in spiral galaxies

We present ongoing hydrodynamic and MHD simulations of molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies. The hydrodynamic results show the formation of molecular gas clouds where spiral shocks compress atomic gas to high densities. The spiral shocks also produce structure in the spiral arms, provided the gas is cold (< 1000 K). When both hot and cold components of the ISM are modeled, this structur...

Global three-dimensional simulations of magnetic field evolution in a galactic disk II. Gas rich galaxies

A fully three-dimensional computation of induction processes in a disk is performed to investigate the evolution of a large-scale magnetic field in gas-rich barred and spiral galaxies in the presence of field diffusion. As input parameters we use time dependent velocity fields obtained from selfconsistent 3D N-body calculations of galactic dynamics. Our present work primarily analyzes the influ...

Magnetic Fields in Galaxies

Most of the visible matter in the Universe is ionized, so that cosmic magnetic fields are quite easy to generate and due to the lack of magnetic monopoles hard to destroy. Magnetic fields have been measured in or around practically all celestial objects, either by in-situ measurements of spacecrafts or by the electromagnetic radiation of embedded cosmic rays, gas or dust. The Earth, the Sun, so...
